GIRLS U13 WIN Cincy Challenge!
In dramatic fashion, the Anthony Wayne United Girls U13 soccer team won the 2005 Cincy Challenge played in Lebanon/Mason,
Ohio, just minutes north of Cincinnati.
In the final game AW was matched up against the Inferno SC Flames from Wilmington, OH. It was a rematch for the two teams who played to a 4-4 tie earlier this year at the Beavercreek Tournament in Beavercreek, OH. Teams came into the final unbeaten, AW was 2-0-1 and Inferno was 3-0.
Both teams started out slow and played mostly a defensive game until Anna Coffman of AW scored on a breakaway goal giving AW a 1-0 halftime lead. In the second half the Inferno Flames stepped up the offensive tempo and scored 2 goals to take a 2-1 lead halfway through the second half. AW had 3 shots on goal in the second half that netted no goals and were trailing with 1 minute 10 seconds to go until Hayley Barrett netted a beautiful goal in the top left hand corner of the goal from 25 yards out on a direct penalty kick, to tie the score. Regulation play ended in a 2-2 tie sending it into overtime.
Two 10 minute overtimes were played with both teams having multiple shots and scoring opportunities but the overtime periods ended 0-0 calling for a shoot out to decide the tournament champion.
Five players from both teams were selected to take one shot each, with the team netting the most goals out of five named champions. The Inferno Flames won the toss and elected to shoot first. Their goalkeeper was the first to try and she hit the cross bar giving AW
an opening to take an early lead. Natalie Ducharme of AW stepped up and sent the ball over the goal
keeper's head to take the lead 1-0. AW’s Hayley Barrett made an outstanding save on the Inferno’s second try to maintain the lead for AW. Marissa Rohen for AW made a shot past their goalie to give AW a 2-0 lead. Once again it was Hayley Barrett denying the 3rd shot by the
Flames to preserve the lead. The Inferno Flames' goal keeper made a save on a shot by AW’s Brittany Plocek to give them hope.
The Flames' next shooter scored making the score 2-1 still in favor of Anthony Wayne.
AW’s 4th shooter Chloe Spencer stepped up and promptly gave Anthony Wayne the deciding goal with a shot passed their goalie, giving AW a 3-1 shoot out lead and a final game score of 3-2. Jubilation erupted with parents, fans and team members running to the middle of the field to share in the excitement.
Anthony Wayne’s charge to the finals was lead by scoring leader, Anna Coffman, who netted 8 of the 9 goals scored for the weekend. In their first game Anthony Wayne beat the Sycamore Arsenal 3-0,
tied WC United G92 1-1, and beat Cardinal Red 3-1 in the semi finals to advance to the finals.
